Winter Freebies for Math, CVC Words, and More!

Happy New Year, Teaching Friends!

I'd love to share a few of my winter freebies with you ... something for reading and math - something for everybody!

Are you working on CVC words? Here's a free game that will give your little guys lots and lots of practice blending to read short vowel words!

Because fluency instruction is so critical to successful comprehension, here's a set of free winter sight word phrases, to help your new readers cluster words appropriately, smoothly, and quickly. You'll find 19 phrase cards in this set - just punch holes and join them with a key ring or carabiner and you've got an instant center activity!

And finally, math!

Here are some matching cards for my PreK and kindergarten friends, with numerals, number word, objects to count or subitize, and ten frames for one to ten.

Best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy new year - a successful year of learning and growing with your class!

Kindergarten Freebies for Winter Learning

Hi, Teaching Friends!

Well, we're back to the time of year when nobody seems too sure about what day of the week it actually is.  To me, at least, holidays turn Thursdays into Sundays in my head, and from there it's all downhill. In some ways, I've always thought that it's kind of nice to lose track of time a bit, and mark the days by planning get-togethers with friends instead of due dates at school.

I know that many of you will be spending these days between the holidays planning your teaching and working on classroom materials for January. If you're teaching kindergarteners, I don't want you to miss out on a special collection of winter freebies searched out for you by Teacher Tam of Teacher Tam's Educational Adventures. Many thanks to Tammy for doing all of the hard work discovering these goodies!

Here are 11 bright and cute math freebies for your K Kids!

Oh, (Rein)deer!

Hi, Teaching Friends!

This post contains an Amazon affiliate link. If you make a purchase using the link,  I will receive a small remuneration which will not add to your purchase price.

There are so many wonderful things that your students want to learn about at this time of year that it's hard to choose! I love to pull out the elements of seasonal celebrations and use them to create mini thematic studies.

You'll find a blend of science, movement, literacy, and math in these activities about reindeer. Let's take a look!

For second and third grades, try some non-fiction reading about reindeer with this freebie from A Grace Filled Classroom. Part of a larger set, this free sampler includes the great page you see here (perfect for use with a doc camera!), a graphic organizer/response to reading page, and a comprehension check which will also give you lots of info about your students' mastery of non-fiction text terminology.

Getting the wiggles out is harder than ever at this time of year! Look at this sweet little variation on the Hokey Pokey from Kiboomu on YouTube. This fun little song and dance is suggested for PreK and kindergarten, but right now I bet there are some desperate first grade and second grade teachers with students who'd love to get the wiggles out with this fun little dance!

Who else but a primary teacher would have not one but many favorite reindeer books? One of my top-of-the-list favorites is Jan Brett's The Wild Christmas Reindeer.  I love this story about how Teeka struggles to prepare the reluctant reindeer for Santa's flight and learns something about herself in the process, but my favorite  part of this book is the expressions on the faces of the reindeer!  After you read it to your class, take a teaching hint from the blog of my friend Tara at The Math Maniac. Check out her great post about writing math story problems based on literature.

For more math, here are two engaging math review games with a Rudolph theme!

Here are the twists that keep these review games fun and fast-paced!
Players take a card from the card bag and solve it.
If the answer is any number besides eight, keep the card.
If the answer is eight (you know, like the "eight little reindeer"!) - put all of your cards back in the bag.
Get a "Rudy!" card - give any one of your cards to any other player.

There are two ways to win - get any eight cards, or collect five reindeer, each wearing a different color Santa hat.

The first grade game set is differentiated at two levels.

Level One includes addition facts through ten, emphasizing +0, +1, doubles, and sums of ten.

Level Two cards are for addition and subtraction through 20, with missing addends and missing subtrahends, too.

Rudy! is great for math centers, but passing the bag and paying a whole class version also lots of fun to play in your morning circle or as a warm-up at the beginning of your math lesson.

There's also a bonus four in a row game included, ideal for more practice in math centers and math tubs.

Here's the second grade version of Rudy! The topics in this set go beyond adding and subtracting  within 20 to topics like attributes of geometric shapes, measurement, adding and subtracting tens, and number patterns.

Do you have a favorite reindeer book or activity that you've used with your class?

Two Seasoned Freebies Find New Homes!

Hi, Teaching Friends!

Have you ever been in a meeting where some of the less-than-young teachers are referred to as "old teachers"? If doesn't much matter whether you're 59 or 29, it's just not the most endearing title in the world. I've heard the term veteran teachers, which kind of makes it sound like we've been in the trenches... well, some days... yes, that's true! I've also heard the title "seasoned teachers", and I kind of like that one!

So, here are some freebies that are "seasoned". I'm a believer in once-free-always-free, but I know that my store also needed some housecleaning.  These freebies have been at TpT for a while. In fact, both were included in earlier editions of the famous TpT Freebie Ebooks.  Now I've shined up these oldies but goodies and moved them to a new home here!

The first freebie is a set of cut-apart puzzles for the 120 chart.

You can now find these six puzzles in the preview of Rowdy Robots ~ Activities for the 120 Chart

The second freebie is a fun December activity that will build your students' familiarity with the vocabulary specific to this month's holidays. It will put a little bit of shaking action in your literacy centers, with the hope of channeling some of that extra energy all your little learners have this month!
You'll now find Shake-a-Bottle for December Holidays only here on this blog, downloadable at Google Drive.

Enjoy these seasoned freebies ... with a little extra oregano and thyme, or whatever suits your fancy! ;)

If you teach second through fourth grade, I hope you'll enjoy using this new year freebie in your math centers for January. It's a set of ten riddle task cards for four digit numbers. The twist is that each and every one of the answers uses only the numbers 2, 0, 1, and 5. Happy 2015!
